Super Juice Cartons!

 I redrew these two 1960s Batman and Superman juice cartons in fluorescent inks because that's the kinda crap I do now! 

Superman Nr.13

 This cover redux of a Danish Superman comic book from 1951 (see original at the bottom) shows the issues with doing artwork in fluorescent inks. Pictured are three different images of the same piece, the top one is from a scan, the second from a photo, and the third a photo under black light. NONE of them properly capture the colors of the original (even after adjusting levels and saturation), but the second one comes the closest. When I sell pieces like this online, I always hope that the buyer is happier when they open the package than when the saw the image on my Etsy page (or wherever). 

Woke Since 1938

 I got so sick of seeing people on the Right trying to deride the new Superman as being "woke propaganda" that I felt I had to draw a response. I knew that when I posted this on my Instagram page, The Daily Superman that I would no doubt lose some followers (I did) and stir up a little conservative ire (I also did). But I'm okay with both of those things. Because one thing you do NOT get to do is claim that "Social Justice Warrior" is a negative thing when it comes to superheroes, and especially Superman. 

Prince Street News: Crisis at Julie's Bar

 The new BACK ISSUE (#159, almost sold out already!) celebrates the 40th anniversary of DC Comics' seminal, universe-streamlining maxi-series, CRISIS ON INFINITE EARTHS. Like many Silver / Bronze Age fanboys, I have very mixed feelings about COIE (as it's known)... while the series was expertly crafted by writer Marv Wolfman and artists George Pérez, Dick Giordano, and Jerry Ordway, and absolutely achieved the epic status for which it aimed... it really wasn't necessary. DC's groundbreaking multiverse (before that was a term) not only allowed for a wide range of storytelling possibilities, it allowed for characters with very different tonalities to exist in the same universe... just on different planes. Also, it really wasn't that hard to follow, despite DC editorial's fears. 

And history has borne that out. DC's infinite earths are back, probably for good. But again, COIE was an exciting comic book event when it came out, and it was a kick to dive into that story for Prince Street News. A lot of inside jokes for the longbox set, so if you've stumbled across this one as a non-fanboy, you won't get most of the gags... but that's okay. The next installment will be for everyone! 

Cover Redux International II

 I was commissioned to do another round of foreign comic book cover recreations (see here for the first six pieces), this time all DC characters... I spent almost as much time researching this project as I did drawing them! But it sure was fun. Note that these are photos taken with my camera (phone) rather than scans because the scans cannot pick up the colors properly. So there's that. 

Prince Street News: Neal Adams 1941-2022

 The new BACK ISSUE (#143) is a special issue paying tribute to comic book artist Neal Adams, who passed in 2022 from complications due to sepsis. To say Adams played an important in my life is putting it mildly. He was my first favorite artist, he fought to get Warner Communications to give credit and compensation to Superman creators Jerry Siegel and Joe Shuster, he battled for creators' rights, and just made comics a much better medium. Here's my tribute (one of many).... 

New Work Dump

 Rather than do a different post for each of these (especially since some of them are new versions of pieces I've already done), here's a quick dump of some new stuff (most of this slated for an as-yet scheduled show with some friends).... 

PRINCE STREET NEWS: More Characters Go SUPER!

 The new BACK ISSUE is a "Super Issue," focusing on the bronze age adventures of Superboy (the first of which was my very first comic book, so I have a fondness for this topic). Other features include pieces on Frank Thorne's super-rare promotional comic book, The Far-Out Super Green, interviews with the syndicated ADVENTURES OF SUPERBOY stars Gerard Christopher and Stacy Haiduk, and articles on superhero versions of Richie Rich, Dagwood, and Goofy. Plus more! Including me! 

This installment of PSN was really fun to do, and it's hard to figure out comic book / strip characters who WEREN'T turned into a superhero at least for one story or gag (and some of these indeed have been, notably the Harvey girls). 

A few of these are "inside fanboy" gags ("Super Slam" is Slam Bradley, a detective created by Superman creators Jerry Siegel and Joe Shuster, so he looks just like their far more famous creation). The Phantom Stranger (a character I love) bit is a nod to a brief period in the 1960s when Marvel Comics gave Doctor Strange a more superhero-ey costume. 

Next issue: A tribute to Neal Adams. This one was personal. Stay tuned.

 Commissioned for a friend, a few changes from the Winslow Mortimer original (mostly, I took off the heroes' boots because even a superhero has to surf barefoot! Capes are one thing, boots another!

Prince Street News: For Sheer Suspense!

 The new BACK ISSUE Magazine (#130) is a super-fun one if you were a comics fan in the '70s and '80s (I mean, they all are, that's the whole gist of the mag, but this one is particularly hoot-worthy), spotlighting Bronze Age Promos, Ads, and Gimmicks (including, naturally, the ubiquitous Hostess ads that appeared in every comic book of the era). 

For this installment of Prince Street News, I did a lot of detail work, completely redrawing entire house ads and covers for some of the things I discuss. Then again, I also used more scans in this episode than in any other PSN strip... so it all balances out!! 

Below is the full strip as it appears in the mag as well as the full redraws. The original art for some of these is available in the ol' Tough Guy Etsy shoppe (note that the Ms. Marvel ad and Captain America cover look different than in the final strip, as they were hand-lettered and colored for the shop). 

WRAPPER REDUX SERIES III

Some months back, I decided I was done doing Lichtensteinian redrawings of other people's artwork because as much as I enjoy doing it, it wasn't the most creative work.
