PRINCE STREET NEWS: More Characters Go SUPER!

 The new BACK ISSUE is a "Super Issue," focusing on the bronze age adventures of Superboy (the first of which was my very first comic book, so I have a fondness for this topic). Other features include pieces on Frank Thorne's super-rare promotional comic book, The Far-Out Super Green, interviews with the syndicated ADVENTURES OF SUPERBOY stars Gerard Christopher and Stacy Haiduk, and articles on superhero versions of Richie Rich, Dagwood, and Goofy. Plus more! Including me! 

This installment of PSN was really fun to do, and it's hard to figure out comic book / strip characters who WEREN'T turned into a superhero at least for one story or gag (and some of these indeed have been, notably the Harvey girls). 

A few of these are "inside fanboy" gags ("Super Slam" is Slam Bradley, a detective created by Superman creators Jerry Siegel and Joe Shuster, so he looks just like their far more famous creation). The Phantom Stranger (a character I love) bit is a nod to a brief period in the 1960s when Marvel Comics gave Doctor Strange a more superhero-ey costume. 

Next issue: A tribute to Neal Adams. This one was personal. Stay tuned.

PEANUTS Sad Song Redux

 I redrew this classic PEANUTS comic strip by Charles Schulz from March 5, 1953. The original strip had no backgrounds, so I added Violet's living room based on elements from other strips of the era.

Spidey Covers Redux... Again!

 More Spider-Man cover recreations, this time tackling AMAZING SPIDER-MAN #9 after Steve Ditko and #121 after John Romita. The cover of #9 was really text heavy, so I adjusted the main image to take up more space and altered some of the text, omitting one blurb and moving other lettering around. 

Secret Country: To Heck with Ole Santa Claus

If there's anything I love more than doing art for Secret Country, it's doing another Secret Country Christmas single! This year, Kearny's finest has given us a cover of Loretta Lynn's ass-kickin' 1966 anti-carol, "To Heck with Ole Santa Claus!" Go give it a spin (if you can call streaming something online "spinning." 

 

Prince Street News: Holiday Grab-Bag!

 The new BACK ISSUE Magazine (#140) is all about dinosaur comics... what better issue for my second Christmas installment of PRINCE STREET NEWS? Okay, so this one doesn't fit the theme... at all!... but it is out now, in December, so... seasonal! 

Anyway, this is another one of those strips where most of the gags are for the longbox set, but thanks to the Marvel Cinematic Universe, you can now make jokes about Ant-Man! As always, if you have any questions, feel free to post them in the comments, I'll do my best to explain why all of this is COMEDY GOLD! 

I've posted a few of the elements from this strip separately below to give more detail. See, Ms. Marvel's belly cutout is a Christmas tree! Get it?

My Favorite Monsters

 I did this series of some of my favorite movie monsters (et al) for an upcoming art show, NERD ALERT II (co-hosted with my pal, Matt Caputo)... From the top: the xenomorph from Ridley Scott's 1979 masterpiece, ALIEN, Norma Bates from Alfred Hitchcock's PSYCHO (1960, oh also, SPOILER ALERT!), the Bride from James Whale's THE BRIDE OF FRANKENSTEIN (1935), Good ol' Brucie from Steven Spielberg's JAWS (1975), Count Orlok from F.W. Murnau's NOSFERATU (1922, a hundred goddamn years ago!!), and finally the demon Pazuzu from William Friedkin's THE EXORCIST (1973). 

The Alien piece is sold already, the others (they measure 3.5 x 5") will be available at the NERD ALERT II show (at the PS Wine Bar at Pet Shop in Jersey City, running November 4-6 only!), and whatever doesn't sell will be going up on the Etsy shop after that.
